Former Cistercian abbey was probably founded by prince Vladislav II in 1144. Roman basilica of Assumption of Virgin Mary consecrated in 1204 formed a core of the monastery and several other buildings were joined to it. In 1420 the monastery was destroyed by the Taboritan army. Only in 1480 the monastery's renewal started and in 17th and at the beginning of the 18th centuries its reconstruction works under plans of J. B. Santini culminated. In 1785 the Cistercian abbey was abolished by the order of Joseph II. In 1826 duke Metternich bought the abbey and rebuilt it into a chateau.
